Our kids share their powerful voices
November 1, 2016
We celebrated the greatness of our students today with Governor Kate Brown, our staff, and the committed supporters who helped us build Open School East.
Thanks to our students for sharing their powerful voices at the ceremony.
It’s official: Gresham’s Open School is open (Gresham Outlook)
Here are two excepts from the I AM poems our students read at the ceremony, with Governor Kate Brown by their side:
“My name is Rayanna
A leader at Open School East
It means open-minded
Courageous, and good friend
A mother’s first daughter”
“My name is Alex Leyva.
It means I’m brave and smart.
It is a really important name to me.
My name story began about 14 years ago.”
Celebrating our growing community!
September 18, 2016
More than 350 families, community partners, staff, students, and supporters helped us celebrate our growing community in East County yesterday! We enjoyed sharing more about our four core programs, all based on advocacy, equity, and rigorous academics, eating good food and ice cream, playing basketball, getting henna tattoos, and making letterpress posters with you!
Thanks to everyone for coming out. We love our Open School community!

Our Step Up staff completes an intensive training session every summer. These amazing human beings are expert advocates, mentors, tutors, family partners, and teacher partners wrapped into one for kids at Roosevelt, Madison and Franklin.
And they get results no one else can. Last year, 100% of Step Up seniors graduated on time and 100% were accepted into post-secondary programs.

We received the highest non-profit rating. Again!
July 1, 2016
Charity Navigator awarded us their highest possible rating again this year! This distinction, which only a quarter of rated non-profits achieve, means that Open School executes its mission in a financially efficient way and outperforms most other non-profits in our area of work. Our students aren’t the only ones we hold to the highest standards.

Bibi McGill sees greatness in our kids
April 8, 2016
At Open School, we surround our kids with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers. That’s why we hosted Bibi McGill, the lead guitarist and musical director of Beyoncé‘s all-female backing band, the Suga Mamas, at Open School North.
As an artist in residence, McGill helped make our middle school Language Arts and Science classes relevant and engaing for our kids. She taught them how to write and record a song, and to see the world through her eyes with meditation, tea ceremonies, and poetry.
Step Up advocacy works
January 18, 2016

January 29, 2016
While visiting Franklin High School to talk about making college more affordable, U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden heard how Step Up helps middle school students transition to high school. They were impressed by one of our amazing students, who told them “the consistency of my advocate was exactly what I needed.”
