Volunteer

Volunteer with Open School and change a life forever.

The only question will be, whose life gets changed?

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and make a difference in turning around the graduation crisis in Oregon. At last check, 2 out of 5 high school students were not graduating on time. Let’s do our part to make sure absolutely none of our students are left behind.

Opportunities vary from tutoring students, guest speaking, or working behind the scenes to support our operations. Last year, 250 amazing volunteers contributed more than 7,300 hours of service to our programs – join the herd!

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Open School North (formerly Open Middle School) helps kids develop a sense of purpose, connection and smarts in 6th-8th grade so they are prepared to do their best in high school. Located in North Portland, OSN serves 60 students from Portland Public Schools.

Open School East (formerly Open School) is a new 7th-12th grade college prep school in East Multnomah County that works with kids who are most likely to drop out of schools. At OSE, these students excel academically, graduate, go to college, and pursue meaningful careers. Starting with a class of 46 in 2014, the school will serve 270 students from six school districts by 2019.

Step Up helps 9th graders who have fallen the furthest behind make a smooth transition to and through their high school career. Each year, the program keeps 300 kids in school and thriving academically at three Portland Public high schools - Roosevelt, Madison, and Franklin.

HOW TO APPLY

On-going volunteers must fill out a Volunteer Application, attend an orientation, and pass a background check. We ask that volunteers working directly with youth make a year-long commitment to the organization. Based on the feedback of past volunteers, we know that this experience will be well worth the commitment!

An overview of current, on-going school year volunteer opportunities can be found below:

Additional volunteer opportunities may be available depending on applicant skillset and program needs during the year. Prospective volunteers may fill out this Google form for direct follow-up about any position inquiries before filling out a full application.

ONE-DAY OPPORTUNITIES

Throughout the year Open School also seeks one-time volunteer support for a variety of events including group projects. One-time volunteers can complete a short PDF or Google form in place of the full application.

Currently, we are seeking volunteers for our biggest annual fundraiser, Got Game, where we successfully raised over $250K just last year. The event is a really great opportunity for new volunteers to learn more about our organization and connect with the students we serve, while making a tangible impact in our annual fundraising efforts. Please sign up here if you’re interested.
