The mission of Open School is to develop connection, capability, and confidence in disconnected youth through relationship-based, quality learning experiences that result in their academic, personal, and community success. Over 80% of our students are youth of color, low income, and are from marginalized communities. We encourage you to explore our website at www.openschoolnw.org.
At Open School we recognize that there is a historic and persistent achievement gap between white students and students from marginalized communities; closing that achievement gap while raising the achievement of all students is a top priority of our organization. Race, Identity, ability, and who one chooses to love must cease to be reliable predictors of students’ achievement and success. In order to achieve this goal, we are committed to deepening equity at every level of our organization including and not limited to staff, students, and leadership.
Please email a cover letter and résumé to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5:00 pm, April 12, 2020. Please reference the position title in the subject line.

Open School believes that each staff member makes a significant contribution to its success. That contribution should not be limited by the assigned responsibilities outlined below. This position description is designed to outline primary duties, qualifications, and job conditions, but not limit the staff person nor the organization to just the work identified. It is our expectation that each staff member will offer his/her services and ideas wherever and whenever necessary to ensure the success of our endeavors.
The Social Emotional Learning Coordinator is a heavily student-facing position that supports positive school culture. The position builds deep relationships with students to then be able to address behavior communications students may exhibit and guide them towards de-escalation, self-regulation, conflict mediation, social awareness, and restorative practices. The position serves to combine the philosophy that all behavior is communication, students often exemplify behaviors when there are lagging skills, and students inherently all want and deserve to learn. This means the SEL Coordinator will often be guiding students through their own emotions and triggers, supporting highly emotional situations, providing support for students to mediate conflict within themselves and with others, and provide consultancy with other staff in helping support student choices.
During the non-Covid-19 pandemic, this position works from the Open School East facility located in East Portland. During our time in this pandemic, all staff are working according to Governor’s orders around school opening. Starting April 19, this position will require time at the facility to perform certain critical duties. This position will be provided with a computer, monitor, and supplies required to perform the following duties.
