At Open School Inc., we advocate greatness. We are an education nonprofit in its 50th year of service. We operate Open School East, an alternative high school in East Multnomah County, and an education-based wrap-around support program that serves students enrolled in Portland Public Schools. Position Overview
Teacher Advocates are on the front line of delivering on Open School East’s mission by providing a high-quality education to underserved students. Teacher Advocates meet their students where they are and support them to achieve goals for high school and beyond. In addition to teaching academic classes, the Teacher Advocate, Math, serves specific students as their advocate. Each Teacher Advocate contributes to creating an identify-affirming, respectful and equity-focused school environment.
Essential Responsibilities
- Teach academic classes and an Advocate class with a hybrid of in-person and online teaching.
- Supervise students and participate in school supported events, inside and outside of school hours.
- Work together with the entire Open School East team to build a cohesive school culture of consistency and collaboration.
- Prepare lesson plans for your academic curriculum according to Common Core State Standards.
- Advocate for a subset of students, monitoring their progress and regularly and proactively updating families.
- Attend school and parent meetings as needed.
Experience, Skills, & Education
Equivalent education and/or experience may be substituted for qualifications. Requirements represent minimum levels of knowledge, skills, and/or abilities. To perform this job successfully, the employee will possess the skills or aptitudes to complete each task proficiently.
- Content expertise and passion for the content area you teach.
- Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university focused in mathematics, education, or related field; Oregon Teaching Certificate strongly preferred.
- Ability to engage in Open School’s equity and anti-racist work at the full staff, program-specific, and individual professional level.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; bilingual skills preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to be collaborative and work with a diverse population to develop relationships and provide high quality professionalism with students, families, and colleagues.
- Knowledge of emerging education and instructional technologies and software, and research-based instructional strategies and models for improving instructional practices.
- Experience working with student populations of color, impacted by trauma, and impacted by poverty.
- Ability to uphold high expectations while operating from a trauma-informed perspective.
- Ability to take initiative, prioritize, plan, and organize.
- Effective problem prevention and problem-solving skills.

Compensation/Benefits
Starting pay $42,000 – $50,000 annually, based on a 10.1-month year. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and comes with a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, Life/AD&D, Short/Long Term Disability, FSA, retirement benefits, and a generous paid time off package including paid holidays plus paid winter and spring breaks.
