Literacy Liberators

Empowering Communities and Strengthening Young Readers

Literacy Liberators empowers local communities to provide high-impact literacy instruction to elementary students, building reading skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Literacy Liberators is a research-based, high-impact literacy tutoring program for students in grades 1-3.

Currently piloted in the Reynolds School District, our program empowers local community members—parents, grandparents, caregivers, and more—to serve as highly effective, paid tutors to our youngest students.

Program Highlights

Modeled on Oakland REACH’s successful “Liberator Model,” our program includes:

  • Literacy Liberators Fellowship: A multi-week paid fellowship that equips community members with evidence-based literacy strategies, leadership development, and skills needed to foster supportive, inclusive learning environments.
  • Academic Support: Liberators provide consistent year-round, high-impact tutoring in small groups for after-school programs, offering support that can be as effective—or even more effective—than classroom instruction.
  • Social-emotional Learning: Liberators empower students and families by fostering a sense of agency, capability, and worth, helping them build the confidence, reading skills, and academic momentum they need to thrive.
